Uninterruptible Power Supply. A UPS is a hardware device that connects in-between the mains power source and other hardware devices. The UPS contains batteries which act as power backup should the mains power line be interrupted. Battery supply duration varies on models; however, some UPS devices can be programmed to send shutdown commands to their connected equipment (e.g. servers) in order to avoid hardware damage and corruption.
